90% of American Cheese Contains Pfizer’s GMO Ingredients.
Clare Hocking .
Reports reveal that around 90% of cheese produced in the United States contains fermentation-produced chymosin (FPC), a genetically modified organism (GMO) ingredient developed by Pfizer in the 1990s. FPC, a genetically engineered clotting agent used in cheese production, replaced traditional animal rennet and is present in most commercial American cheeses. Approved by the FDA in 1990 as “Generally Recognised as Safe” (GRAS), FPC is exempt from GMO labelling , leaving many consumers totally unaware of its use.
Developed by inserting cow genes into genetically modified mold, FPC has been criticised by many as a “Franken-enzyme,” with concerns about transparency due to the GRAS loophole.
Although Pfizer sold the FPC business to Chr. Hansen in 1996, its widespread use persists.
While the FDA and mainstream sources affirm FPC’s safety, many question its long-term implications and the lack of labelling.
Consumers seeking non-GMO options are advised to choose cheeses made with traditional animal rennet or labeled
Non - GMO.
